Sufjan Stevens is a musician, conceptual artist and filmmaker and the author of the original film "urban symphony" Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The feature film is true to its title and captures by means of a kaleidoscope, various images, some ornamental, of the New York expressway between Brooklyn and Queens. "One of the ugliest expressways in the world" (as the author described it during the opening ceremony) is transformed on the screen into a ballet performance of an endless stream of automobiles. The effect is created through the precise interconnection of sound and image, excellent timing and powerful visual ideas such as mirroring, slow motion, dissolving and time-lapse shots. The grey choreography of motors and exhausts is cut with slow-motion shots of dancers in colourful outfits using hula-hoops. "A cinematic suite inspired by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the hulahoop" is the description in the official materials that come with the film. Sufjan Steven directed Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and also shot and cut it. He has accompanied the film with an original music soundtrack perfectly matching each image and exactly in the style of classical city symphonies of the avant-garde period. At PAF the film will be introduced by the film theorist Lenka Dolanová who will also give a lecture on the genre of film city symphonies in the contemporary world as well as Czech cinematography.
