Vilém Novák's project "Them" (31st October – 20th December 2012, Youth Gallery, Brno) concludes the year-long curatorial programme of Fragile Cinema, the partner of PAF. In his own programmed environment, Novák let evolve many creatures during an artificial evolution and thus he intentionally refers to attempts of the graphic designer and developer Karel Sims who, however, did not try to observe similar creatures in their mutual interactions.
These creatures' behaviour is unpredictable, because of the unique disposals of their genetic code. The evolved angular figures in neutral environment of grey colour are inducted into mutual contact by Novák himself; emotional transformations might be individually derived on the background of abstraction. It is not an analogue of acting or author's directorial manipulation, but rather a motive of observed reactions among selected creatures – their behaviour is not gradually animated, but it represents the creatures' own existence, live animation which records them for the resulting video in the similar way as photorealistic image.
The exhibition vernissage takes place on the 30th of October, Youth Gallery, Brno, under the curatorial supervision of Martin Mazanec.
