Record twenty films have been nominated for the Oscar for the best Animated Feature Film this year. You will have the opportunity to see five of them at this year's PAF. It is Mary and Max (Australia), A Town Called Panic (Belgium, France, Luxembourg), Up (USA), 9 (USA), and The Secret of Kells (Ireland, France, Belgium)
All of them have the ambition to win the prestigious Oscar and all are worth your attention. Five absolutely different narrative styles, five different genres, five different animation techniques. Number of films nominated in the category of the best Animated Feature Film and increase in nominations up to possible five makes the year 2009 of the Academy Awards a unique one.
Although mostly mainstream films, they do not necessarily need to be intended for children. The authors are not afraid of darker, more pessimistic, and often more realistic attitude, unrestrained Dadaistic extravagance, not even intelligent portrayal of a family story without useless sentiment.
