7:00 p.m. | TUE May 10th

CZECH CENTER NEW YORK, 321 East 73rd Street, New York City, NY 10021

A selection of contemporary videos personally presented by artists and curators from the Czech Republic. The festival PAF deals with the term of film animation in a wider concept of animation phenomena in the context of cinematography, media studies and visual arts. The Other Visions program is mostly based on the curatorial competition section of PAF.

Other visions of Czech animation represent such works of art that are being more often on displays than screened in movie theaters. Their authors usually do not have any academic film education, but in most cases they come from artistic background. They are thus well informed about development of 20th century art that was dominated by media of photography, film and video, and also by many artistic styles and movements. To them, moving pictures mean only one of the expressive possibilities thanks to which they often create films lacking film narration and tight narrative structures. The selection follows the most distinctive tendencies – other visions that happened in Czech animation after 2000.

PAF curators think about animation in considerably extended conception, which is able to absorb not only technical categories and narrative structure, but also genuinely conceptual videos that do not remind of animation at all. And even so, such extreme forms that are seemingly incompatible with animation are included in the selection, just because they show the influence of animation through various alternative techniques. The projections are divided into three blocks – Animation Abstraction, Space without Heroes and Other Heroes that reflect on three attitudes of Czech production. The basis is a hero, his elimination, absence and presence. The character of a hero is inherently connected with commercially successful cartoons, however in context of Czech production, the hero is neglected in the interest of different kind of message which to the certain extent characterizes audiovisual forms the contemporary Czech artists are interested in.
