This section monitors the ways in which animation helped to at least enhance suppressed self-expression in the Central European countries that were tied to communism. Jiří Trnka’s The Hand and Jan Švankmajer’s The Flat represent metaphorical forms, whose message was not clear to the censorship apparatus and which united the audience in their communal understanding. The central European present will be approached by the Polish author Robert Proch (Virus) and the Hungarian film I am Simon by Tünde Molnár.
