This is now the third time that Live animation has been presented at PAF. It is a kind of animation that originates in the real time of projection. Presentations and a working analysis in combination with audiovisual performances, will point out the transformation of techniques applied during live visual performances.
The lecture by Finnish artist and curator Mia Makela (Solu), will focus on the so-called Live Cinema phenomenon. Samples and analysis of MAX/MSP/JITTER, Isadora and Modul8 will be presented in the context of current initiatives in the sphere of multimedia performance. A chapter from her text The Practice of Live Cinema, in which she focuses on basic aspects of live audiovisual performances, is a part of the catalogue. At PAF she will also present an audiovisual performance called Kaamos (2008 – 2009), in which the pre-filmed image is being destructed by means of technological interference during the performance. A sample of so-called analogue animation is represented by A/V performance of VJs Pure B band and an artist, TOY_BOX. Together they will introduce the project Comics Live: The Dead Police, One for Hope and One for Peace (most of the visual performance develops right there – by means of scraps of paper, tiny, almost architectonical models of surroundings or toys). On the occasion of Live Animation, the work of three animating VJs, whose visual style is part of musical bands, will be presented. Concerts of the local bands performing "electro-new-wave" (Like She, Kazety and 1A2V1) are inherently closely connected to the intensity of their visuals. A dramaturgical interconnection ofSlovak electronic duo Pjoni & Ink Medget togetherwith VJ tvprodukt is being planned.
Besides the presentations and audiovisual concerts, there will be a visually difficult documentation of the film performance Celestial Subway Lines / Salvaging Noise (2005) by Ken Jacobs, the legend of experimental film. The record is composed of four performances with John Zorn, a musician of the New York "underworld". It is a literal manifestation of an optical invention, image projection, which preceded film as well as photography (the performance is inadvisable for people suffering from epilepsy). Ken Jacobs will be participating in the audience discussion via internet telephone.
