A cross section: The best of Croatian animation in the period between 1969 and 1987. The Zagreb School was still on top.
The products were films that were simple in design but with an ingenious satirical tone as well as more serious existential dramas and even one ecological horror. The filmmakers were experimenting with animation techniques as well as with music. They were using simple drawings, a combination of animated and feature films and through these avant-garde techniques, collage and video clip came into being. The progressive films from the 70s; Diary or Satiemania (1978) are examples of this practice. Young graduates from the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts were seeking their inspiration in the modern magazine graphics as well as in German expressionism, and apparently they were also influenced by surrealism and pop art. The artists of the Zagreb School remain faithful to their principles – the most important is the individual contribution of the film creator, there is no use of the spoken word and only short films are produced. The second historical section will be closed by two films nominated for an Oscar – Satiemania and Tup Tup (1972).
