The seventh year of the Festival of Film Animation took place from the 11th to 14th of December 2008. Adult Animation: The main topic of this year's PAF within which the audience could see several feature films and dozens of short films that are definitely not intended for children. Films by Ralph Bakshi, who is considered a father of Adult Animation, met with great success; his films Fritz the Cat, Coonskin and Wizards were screened.
Irish Animation: exploration of independence phenomenon. The lecture on history and development of Irish animation was given by the Irish notable historian and theorist Dermont Corrigan. Irish delegation consisted of the representatives of Cartoon Saloon studio – Ross Murray, Ross Stewart and Tom Moore. New Irish short films, commercials and samples from the latest Irish feature animation entitled Brendan and the Secret of Kells were accompanied by comments of the present filmmakers.
Peter Kubelka, who introduced his metric and metaphoric films within two lectures in crowded film hall, became PAF Cult. He was awarded Lifetime Achievement in Inspirative Exploration of Film Processes Possibilities.
Live Animation: The keystone of the section was the topic of using polyecran principles, i.e. image disintegration into several screens. The artists, who were introduced within this section, generate unique works of art in real time and they are formally based on mutual direct interaction of pictorial material and outer stimuli – either musical, rhythmical, dramatic or others. Within the section there were many various performances, e.g. French formation Burstscratch (L.Berger, S.Simon, L.Barbier), local improvisational trio Mikroloops (M.Blažíček, S. Abrahám, M.Cabowitz), Japanese sound composer and visual artists Ryoji Ikeda and Handa Gote ensemble (T. Procházka, R. Smolík, J. Hybler, D. Freudl, D. Singer, J. Švarcová).
Konvikt Resident: Again, the main principle of the section was polyecran. The aim of the residency is to provide the selected artists with financial background and venues of Konvikt, in which the Festival takes place, so that they could create original works of art. During the festival, the audience had an opportunity to visit installations by Jan Šrámek, Filip Nerad / Petr Cabalka and Filip Cenek who made an exhibition entitled Anymade. The second Konvikt Resident Ondřej Vavrečka set his work in Corpus Christi Chapel, where he screened his film Linden Tree of the Third Millennium. This film is shot by 16mm camera and was screen by means of three projectors and the story was formed on big screen on polyecran basis. The festival became an owner of this film artwork.
PAF Rewind: Newly emerged section whose aim is to educate the audience in a pleasing way. The year of 2008 was focused on pixilation technique. The spectators had an opportunity to watch the oldest pixilated films that had been awarded at international festivals, and a block of films made by Czech animation schools using pixilation technique. The charming pixilator Miloš Tomić manifested this technique within his workshop and during four days, he made a short pixilated film, which was screened during the closing ceremony of the festival.
Other Visions competition section strives for disclosure and appreciation of works that have an imaginative influence on artistic as well as film scene. The selection of ten films and videos that originated in the Czech Republic during the last 18 months was selected by Martin Fišr. The professional Jury, which consisted of Martin Blažíček, Alena Boika and Dermot Corrigan, awarded a "moving picture" internet-video by Martin Kohout aka PASH*.
