Competition Other Visions is the one and only competition section of PAF – Festival of Film Animation. It aims to map out the field of moving images of film and video in the Czech Republic. By curated selections, it tries to enable the current domestic audiovisual production that find itself on the border line between fine arts, video art and animation to be more accessible and openly accepted by the public. Every year's selection has been unique thanks to the various interests of the curators who select ten nominated works. The main criteria for submission into competition are the premise that the work is possible to be screened in the cinema and is not older eighteen months. Both professional and amateur artists can submit their moving images.

FRIENDLY CINEMA CHOICE / OTHER VISIONS 007

LUCIFER (ALL THE BITCHES HANDS UP!) / LUCIFER (RUCE VZHŮRU VŠICHNI KURVY!) DIR.: MIROSLAV BAMBUŠEK / CZECH REPUBLIC / 2007 / DVD-VIDEO / 35 MINUTES

The very first film piece of the theatre director and iniciator of the theatre project Persecution (especially political themes). Lucifer is actually the record of a theatre presentation. Actors and musicians naturally enliven with sounds the puppet film that employs original and raw art form to narrate a mystic tale of tales. The sounds: Karel Dobrý and others.

THE ENCHANTER / KOUZELNÍK DIR.: MARTIN BÚŘIL / CZECH REPUBLIC / 2006 / DVD-VIDEO / 7 MINUTES

Everybody can be wrong, you're gonna be involved forever teddy. Being an enchanter is pain in the ass, if you, panda, if you would only know. Why do some people want to charm much more than others???

THE FRONTIERS / DIE GRENZE DIR.: KATEŘINA DRŽKOVÁ / CZECH REPUBLIC / 2007 / DVD-VIDEO / 2 MINUTES

Katka, born in ČSSR, (Czechoslovakian Socialist Republic) went shopping with her family to DDR (German Democratic Republic) when she was just a child, their goods were much more luxurious then in ČSSR. Karin, born in DDR, went shopping with her family to ČSSR when she was just a child, their goods were much more luxurious then in DDR..

UNTITLED (1. TUNE; 2. IMAGE THAT REFLECTS ITSELF) / BEZ NÁZVU (1. ZNĚLKA; 2. OBRAZ, KTERÝ SÁM SEBE ODRÁŽÍ) DIR.: JIŘÍ HAVLÍČEK & FILIP CENEK / CZECH REPUBLIC / 2005-7 / DVD-VIDEO / 3 MINUTES

The whole of pictures and scrapes as if stray around the table suddenly became a motion picture, which also has its tune. Structuralized fragments that waits for audience to arrange them.

3 BITS / 3 KOUSKY DIR.: IVOŠ HOS / CZECH REPUBLIC / 2007 / DVD-VIDEO / 5 MINUTES

A darkened ballad of three verses that needs to be read through the space "between the lines." Simple and original form of motion picture, which is set as a trap on the viewer. The strong binding of the seen and the read is only seemingly the central theme here.

RED / ČERVENÁ DIR.: LUKÁŠ KELLNER / CZECH REPUBLIC / 2007 / DVD-VIDEO / 3 MINUTES

Video sequence built upon the principle of keeping and collecting the image. Th e repeating shot of a path leading through woods is concealed with such cut-outs of video that are "tuck together" – the final image is just a kind of time-jigsaw.

CHEESY SNOW DIR.: PAVEL RYŠKA / CZECH REPUBLIC / 2007 / DVD-VIDEO / 4 MINUTES

Waggish and light-hearted mice in early animations became from the end of the 20th century the bearers of diff usive messages; they managed later to enact even the roles of sensitive and adventurous teenagers. Their diligence used to be rewarded with the point, but the success enforced them to shoot another exhausting sequels. And the deliverance came only with highly-feared oblivion... Cheesy snow is a little comment to the fate of these mythic creatures.

UNTITLED / BEZ NÁZVU DIR.: MATĚJ SMETANA / CZECH REPUBLIC / 2007 / DVD-VIDEO / 1 MINUTE

Matěj Smetana invited his friends for a party and asked them to bring the object they would like to animate. He didn't restrain the participants' choice, neither the animation technique. He made a photo-by-photo animation during seven hours, when 28 friends of his took part.

MR. MÖBIUS LIVES ON THE 2ND FLOOR DIR.: VIKTOR TAKÁČ/ CZECH REPUBLIC / 2007 / DVD-VIDEO / 10 MINUTES

The manipulation with motion picture of video is based on so called Möbius' strip – a surface with one side only, just one boundary element, which was described by 19th century mathematician August Ferdinand Möbius who "lives in 2nd floor."

LAYERED / VRSTVENÍ DIR.: TRAKOD (MATYÁŠ VACEK & MILAN ŽÁK) / CZECH REPUBLIC / 2007 / DVD-VIDEO / 7 AND 6 MINUTES

Stratifying is a video-screening that can't be created fully digitally. With the use of painting, there are created two mutually dependent components – one existing thanks to the other.

FRIENDLY CINEMA

Our Friendly Cinema intends to map the frontiers between filmmaker's creation and motion pictures of film or video that are created by visual artists. The transfer of the motion pictures from gallery into cinema, from white-cube room into black-box room, and their confrontation with the motion pictures that were originally created for cinema presentation - all this remains the central motif of Friendly Cinema.

The choice for Olomouc competition Other Visions should focus on "innovative" animation techniques. We consider animation any syntactic manipulation within motion picture (for example a mere manipulation with motion within photographically realist shot or sequence). During the choice we were also interested in the possible visual illusion that is mediated through animation, and whether it is possible to imitate or even "fake" animation with aids of general atributes like a puppet, fitfulness of motion, a knot on a napkin or an eye dashing on a knitted cap.

Videos of various length will be presented during the two diff erent, but pervious screenings. Some of the short motion pictures will offer a multiplied experience thanks to the addition of spontaneousely repeated screenings.
