lecture with samples– Mirjam Struppek (DE)
Cities are venues for creating new and engaging visual experiences. How do they contribute to the lively character of their urban surroundings and what is their potential for interaction and the creation of shared experiences? Mirjam Struppek, a city planner, theorist and leading figure of the Facades festival in Berlin, will speak about the themes of infrastructure and integration in urban surroundings.
Interactive visual installations, public projections, media facades and urban screens have emerged as a recent art form in urban public spaces, reclaiming the predominantly commercial sphere of digital moving images in our cities. They are venues for creating new and engaging visual experiences in an animated urban space and on an architectural surface. They have become open and interactive platforms through the use of complementary new media tools. Can they positively engage audiences and contribute to the experience of a civil society? Can they animate people and foster engagement, going beyond just animated entertainment? What do they actually contribute to the lively character of their urban surroundings? What is their potential for interaction and creating shared experiencesand what are their limits? The presentation will look at basic crucial issues surrounding this infrastructure, such as rethinking ownership, infrastructure, careful integration in the urban environment and the social context. Influenced by these factors it explores the content for this infrastructure that is in various ways trying to animate the city and its inhabitants.
The lecture will be given by the Berlin city planner and theorist Mirjam Struppek, a leading figure of the unique festival Media Facades Berlin and a member of several research teams dealing with so called urban screens focused on media facades.
