The laureate of the ninth Award for artists over 35 - Award from Vladimír Havlík is the Ostrava-based painter, performer, photographer and curator Jiří Surůvka. The list of finalists of the award also included Zbyněk Baladrán, Milena Dopitová, Jaromír Novotný and Dušan Zahoranský.
“In his works, Jiří Surůvka employs a specific expression that significantly influenced the art scene in Ostrava. He has become an important figure of the Czech art scene mainly in the field of performance, as he enriched the heritage of the art form with humour and elementary qualities,” says the jury about the results.
Winner of the Best exhibition award is the First Retrospective of Ján Mančuška that took place in the Municipal Gallery Prague and presented thoroughly the works of Mančuška, who in his short life had become a key figure of Czech art of the turn of the century.
Best group exhbition of the year according to the jury is the Distant Observers curated by Nina Michlovská at the Gallery of Modern Art in Roudnice nad Labem. Through the exhibited works of Alena Kotzmannová, Karolína Mikesková, Tomáš Moravec, Jan Pfeiffer, Anna Ročnová, Lucia Scernaková and Pavla Sceranková, Michlovská delivered a singular view on the relation between people and the universe.
Eva Koťátková was awarded the Best artwork award for her theatrical performance The Judicial Murder of Jakob Mohr, a conclusive work of the project The Two-Headed Biographer and the Museum of Notions that focused on the role of biography in the work of mentally ill artists, whether they take the form of text, image or everyday performance.
The award serves as a gesture of the young generation of artists and theorists towards the generation of older artists. It is especially an appreciation that is mediated to a certain artist whose election is arranged by more than 500 people from the Czech Republic who are not 35 in the time of the election and who thus nominate two artists over 35. The sum of received votes creates a group of five – seven finalists. In the second stage, a laureate is voted every year by a different jury. The age limitation of "nominators" is voted intuitively; character of the award depends on meeting of replaced jury and the finalists in their ateliers.
