João Maria Gusmão's and Pedro Paiva's artistic work includes the creation of 16 and 35mm photographs and statues. The installation features optical instruments such as camera obscura. Their activities often result in "poetic-philosophic narratives."
João Maria Gusmão (1979) and Pedro Paiva (1977) live and work in Lisbon. They started working together in 2001 on the "InMemory" exhibition at the Galeria Zé dos Bois in Lisbon. Aside from several monographic exhibitions in museums and other contemporary art venues, they went on to represent Portugal at the 53rd International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale (2009), and were invited to take part in "The Encyclopedic Palace", the main exhibition of the Biennale in 2013.
