This year in Other Visions competition participated in total 49 works. Based on curatorial judgement made by David Kořínek, only 10 works from all were selected to participate in the competition. They were confronted with a classic projection situation in the Corpus Christy Chapel and with the gallery situation, since they were presented during the whole festival in the Attic Gallery at Konvikt as an installation, thus subjected to the constant judgement of the international jury as well as the festival audience. The audience could vote for their favourite by inserting the completed ballot paper into the present ballot box.
International jury consisting of Takeshi Murata, András Cséfalvay and Ondřej Jakubec has pronounced as follows:
"In choosing the winner for the juried competition, we based our decision on two criteria: The strength of concept and command of technical execution. We came to the agreement that the video best fulfilled this is Warped Jan by Marie Hajkova and Petr Sprincl.
The film creates great suspense and emotion in its storytelling, filming only the locations presumed to be those of the subject's life. There is also an expertise exhibited in the use of 8mm film. It supports the blurring of the multiple accounts from Warped Jan's acquaintances, and ultimate mystery and tragedy in his life. The camera's viewpoint shifts from outside witness to first person account and back seamlessly.
This creates a great sense of empathy of the subject, and a powerful portrait of abject isolation.
We would also like to award a special prize to Veronika Vlkova, Jan Sramek and Martin Buril for theyr animation Spell of Forgetfulness."
The winner of Other Visions competition for 2013 thus became the work Warped Ján by Marie Hájková and Petr Šprincl (2013, 17.02 min) which also won the Audience award.
Special prize of the jury was given to Spell of Forgetfulness by Veronika Vlková, Jan Šrámek and Martin Búřil (2013, 7.51 min).
Prizes were awarded in the presence of the authors. Apart from recognitions and acknowledgements they also received symbolic "St. Nicholas Day's presents" – designed bags with PAF 2013 visuals, traditional "PAF present" of jar filled with traditional Olomouc cheese and professional headphones Sennheiser HD215 and HD202, given into the competition by the company Panter.
All the winners also received the publications from Edition PAF of their choice.
The final ten moving images of film and video that took part in the Other Visions competition this year, will be presented during 2014 in Czech Republic as well as abroad and overseas as Other Visions 2013.
Congratulations to all winners!
