CROATIAN ANIMATION

CROATIAN ANIMATION

VIII. Festival of Film Animation 2009

A complex cross-section of the history and specifics of Croatian animation. Reaching mastery in the so-called Zagreb School, it has established the tradition for the majority of filmmakers to author their films from the screenplay through animation to direction. Besides traditional animation, Croatia also offers independent and avant-garde circles whose representatives are looking for new ways of thinking through animation, examining the borders between the media. The section is being cooperated by the Zagreb Film a Croatian Audiovisual Centre.

section CROATIAN ANIMATION

series of films

Nine movies or first short film, the first Oscar for a non-American film, a graphic and abstract experiment, a horror story about a giant fly, and much more. The history of Croatian animation is inevitably linked with the era of the so-called Zagreb school of Animated Films. Its origins can be traced back to 1956 and it was its very first phase that also marked its professional climax. Typical features of the School were „limited“ animation and creative co-operation. Their efforts lead to the foundation of the Zagreb Film company, an organization that has had a significant voice not only within the sphere of Croatian animation, but internationally.

THE SELECTION OF ZAGREB’S CLASSIC II

11:00 | Sunday 13.12. | film auditorium

section CROATIAN ANIMATION

series of films

A cross section: The best of Croatian animation in the period between 1969 and 1987. The Zagreb School was still at the top of its creative production. The result is visually simple, but ingenious, satirical films on one side, on the other side; more serious existential dramas, and even one ecological horror. The authors experiment with animation techniques as well as with music. Yet not even the filmmakers from the second phase employed the spoken word in their work to a greater extent; it is therefore the visuality by which means their artistry and talent speak to the audience.

section CROATIAN ANIMATION

series of films

Young and talented? Classics and experimentalists? This year’s PAF Cult is dedicated to the prominent Croatian author Ivan Ladislav Galeta. He has compiled a special selection of twenty-five films for the Croatian animation section, mainly dissertations whose authors are graduates of the Department of animated film and new media in Zagreb. They represent the youngest generation of animators whose films are exceptional and captivating. This “Top 25“ will present the most interesting works, among others a film by a Czech student Jana Hrušková.
